The Chew Chew
About This Spot
Walking into The Chew Chew immediately feels like stepping into a warm, inviting neighborhood gem where comfort meets a touch of refinement. Nestled on a quiet stretch of Riverside, this American restaurant balances a lively, approachable energy with pockets of relaxed, intimate corners where conversations can settle and meals are savored at their own pace.
The atmosphere here hums with a casual elegance—familiar yet thoughtfully curated. You’ll notice a subtle buzz of chatter from families, longtime locals, and small groups enjoying the night out, creating a vibrant background that sharpens rather than overwhelms. The space invites you to unwind, with soft lighting and attentive service that makes you feel genuinely seen without hovering.
At The Chew Chew, the menu quietly celebrates American classics with creative flair, a blend of rich flavors and seasonal ingredients that appeal across tastes. Whether it’s the thoughtful execution behind a perfectly grilled salmon, the depth found in a hearty wild boar meatloaf, or the comforting warmth of a French onion soup, each plate carries a sense of careful attention and familiar satisfaction. It’s the kind of place where a shared appetizer like bacon-wrapped dates or fresh oysters on ice opens the evening with a little delight, setting a relaxed tone for what’s to come.
This is also a spot that feels alive with small moments—friends leaning in over plates loaded with steak Diane or mussels, the quiet smiles exchanged across a table during a Friday fish and chips special, the comforting draw of a rich, golden lava cake to close the night. The Chew Chew manages to hold that balance of a neighborhood favorite that feels both approachable and a bit special, where the service is friendly and attentive, contributing to an overall atmosphere that’s welcoming and warm.
While the lively ambiance occasionally bubbles with the playful energy of families and groups, it’s never in a way that overshadows the enjoyment of the food and company. The Chew Chew invites you to settle in, taste familiar dishes with a fresh perspective, and enjoy the unspoken rhythms of a place where great food and genuine hospitality quietly intersect.

My partner & I came to scope out this restaurant as one of our options for post-marital ceremony dinner. The service was excellent; our waiter was very attentive & friendly. The vibe was elegant & chill; tho there were a handful of loud kiddos that were driving me nuts. The food was also quite tasty; I ordered the rigatoni + vodka sauce (added chicken) & my partner got the grilled salmon. I enjoyed my meal though would’ve liked more chicken & my partner said her mashed potatoes were fairly salty.

Love this local place!!! All of their food is so good especially the filet mignon, & the crispy creamy wild shrimp! Also love half off oyster Thursdays & the mussels. Rainbow trout special was also very tasty. Great execution of food, ambiance & service! Their holiday menus are also great.

Great food great service but so so loud. There was a table of 5 women and they were just so loud. Our server also referenced it. The pork chop was delicious and my friends had the trout and the fish and chips, and both were great! I would go back but hopefully the noise issue needs to be addressed. Very kid friendly if that matters to you, either way.

The meal here was pretty good and our server, Lucas, was a notch next to perfection. He helped with questions we all had. He made sure our drinks never got low, and all with a great attitude. The foods we're all good for the most part, just salt on fries was way too much. Our friends enjoyed their meals. My burger was a bit short of the mark, as they could not make it how I wanted it done. We might go back for another take of the menu. The desserts were delicious and topped off the meal.

My family had dinner and drinks here last week and we had a wonderful time! The atmosphere was warm and cozy, and we loved being at a table by the window. We had a disabled person in our group, so I did not get to see the second floor. Our servers were very professional and all staff were nice and helpful. We ordered the Friday fish and chips special which everyone liked. Note: the coleslaw is very onion-y which some didn’t care for. I had the pepperoni and sauce sage flatbread with added balsamic glaze. So delicious and definitely could be shared. Another highlight was the dumpling of the day appetizer which had beef and cabbage with ginger. I will definitely be back to try new things in the future, probably as a date night.

Update 1/8/23 Still great! It's become one of our favorite places. Recent menu changes, the Hazelnut Trout much more amazing than I expected, the salmon was cooked perfectly and was delicious. The side of roasted cauliflower was a great appetizer as well Original review: A culinary delight! Where to begin? This has been in my places to visit for almost a year, and when some friends wanted to get dinner together it was suggested. The service was great, the drinks were fantastic, and the food, oh my god, so delicious! I could go on raving, but just go and taste the food and see for yourself. Maybe we'll see you there, we'll definitely be back!

Beef Wellington and New York strip steak were awesome! Isaac our waiter was very friendly and the atmosphere was great. The place is a 5 minute walk from my house and I always wanted to try it out. Worth it!
